"Tupinamba" Natural Recordings by Native Speakers
The Tupinambá (also known as Tupinamba) is an extinct Tupian language spoken in Brazil, particularly in the states of Bahia, Sergipe, and Pernambuco. It was spoken by the Tupinamba people, who inhabited southern Brazil.
However, the more common meaning of the term "Tupinamba" refers to the Tupinambá people, an indigenous people who traditionally inhabited the coastal regions of Brazil, specifically in the areas around the Cananéia and Guarapuava rivers, in what is now the state of São Paulo.
The Tupinambá people were skilled hunters, gatherers, and fishermen, and were known for their resistance to European colonization. They were forced to interact with the European colonizers and were exposed to diseases that decimated their population.
The name "Tupinambá" is derived from the Tupi word "tupinamby," which means "those who handle mace," referring to the strength and bravery of the people.
