"Tracheotomies" Natural Recordings by Native Speakers
A tracheotomy is a surgical procedure where an incision is made in the neck to create an airway opening in the trachea (windpipe). This opening is made to help patients who have difficulty breathing, caused by an obstruction or other respiratory issue, breathe more easily.
A tracheotomy can be done for various reasons, such as:
To bypass a blockage in the upper airway
To provide oxygen to a person who has a chronic respiratory condition
To remove secretions from the airway
To relieve pressure on the throat or trachea
After the procedure, a tracheostomy tube (a flexible tube made of plastic or silicone) is inserted through the incision to keep the airway open. The tube connects to a ventilator or oxygen tank, allowing the patient to breathe more easily.
It's worth noting that there is a difference between the two terms:
Tracheotomy refers specifically to the surgical procedure of making the incision in the neck.
Tracheostomy refers to the entire procedure, including both the incision and the insertion of the tube.
Tracheotomies can be temporary or permanent, depending on the underlying condition and the individual's needs.
