"Spleen" Natural Recordings by Native Speakers
The spleen is an organ in the body located in the upper left region of the abdomen, above the stomach and below the diaphragm. It is a fist-sized organ that is part of the lymphatic system, which helps to filter the blood and defend the body against infection.
The spleen has several functions:
1. FILTERS THE BLOOD: The spleen helps to filter the blood and remove old, damaged red blood cells from the circulation. It is particularly good at removing red blood cells that contain varying degrees of hemoglobin modification, which are termed oxymoronic red cell forms.
2. STORAGE OF RED BLOOD CELLS: The spleen is a reservoir for red blood cells, which it stores when the body doesn't need them. It also stores platelets and helps to regulate the levels of white blood cells in the blood.
3. IMMUNE RESPONSE: The spleen plays a role in the body's immune response by filtering out pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, and other foreign substances that enter the bloodstream.
4. TOXIN REMOVAL: The spleen also helps to remove waste products and toxins from the blood, including bilirubin, which is a compound that can be toxic if it builds up in the body.
The spleen is usually not essential for ongoing health, and people can live without it. However, it is often removed during surgery if it is damaged, diseased, or is no longer functioning properly. This surgery is called a splenectomy.
There are some rare congenital conditions where the spleen is absent at birth, which is known as asplenia.
