"Richter" Meaning

The Richter scale is a logarithmic scale used to express the magnitude of earthquakes. It was developed by Charles Francis Richter in 1935.

The Richter scale measures the magnitude of an earthquake on a scale from 0 to 10, with higher numbers indicating more powerful earthquakes. Each whole number increase on the scale represents a tenfold increase in the amplitude of the seismic waves, or about 31.6 times more energy released.

The Richter scale is sometimes misunderstood as measuring the intensity of the earthquake, but it actually measures the magnitude, based on the size of the seismic waves recorded by seismographs. The intensity of an earthquake, which is a measure of the actual effects of the earthquake on the Earth's surface, is reported using the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI).
