"Proserpina" Meaning

In Roman mythology, Proserpina is the daughter of Ceres, the goddess of agriculture and fertility. According to myth, Proserpina was abducted by Pluto, the god of the underworld, and taken to the world beneath. Her mother, Ceres, was so grief-stricken that she refused to let the earth produce any crops until her daughter was returned. Eventually, a deal was struck between Jupiter (the king of the gods) and Pluto to allow Proserpina to spend six months of every year with her mother in the world above, and the other six months with her husband in the underworld. As a result, the changing of the seasons is said to be a manifestation of Proserpina's cycles between the world above and below.
