"Possessive" Meaning

A possessive noun or pronoun is used to indicate that something belongs to someone or something. It shows ownership or connection.

Examples:

John's book (the book belongs to John)
My car (the car belongs to me)
The dog's bowl (the bowl belongs to the dog)

Possessive nouns can be formed by adding 's' or 'es' or 'apostrophe + s' to the end of a noun:

S (for singular nouns): cat → cat's
Es (for plural nouns): dogs → dogs'
Apostrophe + s (for nouns ending in 'y'): city → city's

Note that some plural nouns don't form the possessive by adding 's, but by using an apostrophe + s: children → children's.

Possessive Suffixes

The possessive suffix is used to show that something belongs to someone or something.

Singular Nouns: Add '-s' for singular nouns ending in a consonant sound, and 's for singular nouns ending in a vowel sound.

My friend's car. (Here, the word "friend" ends with a vowel sound, so we add 's.)
The cat's ball. (Here, the word "cat" ends with a consonant sound, so we add -s.)
Plural Nouns: Add 's' to make the possessive form. Some words need an apostrophe added as well.

The children's toys. (Here, we add 's to "children" and add an apostrophe as well.)
The cats' toys. (Here, it's more common to add an apostrophe after "cats" and then "s".)
Irregular Plurals: Do the same process as for singular nouns, considering the last sound of the noun.

The bus's wheels. (The word "bus" becomes "bus's".)
