"Micelle" Meaning

A micelle is a small, spherical cluster of surfactant molecules in a solvent that has a hydrophilic (water-loving) outer shell and a hydrophobic (water-fearing) inner core. Surfactant molecules have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic ends, allowing them to dissolve in both water and oil. When a surfactant molecule is in an aqueous solution, the hydrophilic end dissolves in the water while the hydrophobic end does not. As more surfactant molecules dissolve, the hydrophobic ends begin to group together forming a micelle, which is stabilized by the hydrophilic ends that point outward, away from the hydrophobic core.
