"Interneurons" Natural Recordings by Native Speakers
Interneurons are a type of nerve cell, also known as a neuron, that resides within the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). They are located within the brain, spinal cord, and ganglia, and play a crucial role in the integration of sensory information, regulating various bodily functions, and facilitating communication between different parts of the nervous system. Unlike motor neurons, which transmit signals from the CNS to muscles and glands, and sensory neurons, which transmit signals from sensory receptors to the CNS, interneurons do not directly connect the CNS to muscles or glands, but instead, act as both excitatory and inhibitory neurons, modulating the signal transmission between neurons. They are often classified as either excitatory or inhibitory interneurons, depending on whether they increase or decrease the activity of other neurons. Interneurons are estimated to make up the majority of neurons in the CNS, with some estimates suggesting that they comprise up to 90% of all neurons.
