The word "gnu" refers to a large African antelope or also known as the wild ox. It is also the name of a popular open-source operating system, Linux, which is often referred to as GNU/Linux.
Gnotobiotic refers to the condition of being free from recognizable microorganisms, particularly bacteria, viruses, and fungi. In scientific research, gnotobiotic animals or environments are used to study the effects of microorganisms on the host or ecosystem. In other words, a gnotobiotic system is one that is intentionally kept sterile or free from known microorganisms to control and understand the impact of microbiota.
